Abu Dhabi Airports has officially announced the early reopening of the Northern Runway (13L/31R) at Zayed International Airport (AUH), which is now fully operational for both arrivals and departures. This reopening comes after the successful completion of an extensive rehabilitation project that aimed to enhance the runway’s infrastructure and operational capabilities.

The Northern Runway Rehabilitation project introduced a range of significant improvements. One of the most noteworthy aspects was the reinforcement and resurfacing of the runway using 210,000 tonnes of high-quality asphalt, ensuring its durability and resilience for years to come. In addition to the physical enhancements, the project also included major technological advancements that elevate safety and operational efficiency.

Among these advancements is a new, redundant ground visibility monitoring system designed to improve safety conditions for aircraft operations. The introduction of a state-of-the-art Instrument Landing System (ILS) has also been implemented, providing improved precision in navigation. Furthermore, over 1,200 energy-intensive halogen airfield lights have been replaced with environmentally friendly LED technology, marking a significant step towards sustainable airport operations.

The transition to LED lighting not only underscores Abu Dhabi Airports' commitment to environmental responsibility but also aligns with global sustainability goals. This upgrade complements enhancements made to critical navigational aids, such as the ILS and Runway Visual Range (RVR) systems, which collectively bolster both safety and efficiency, particularly during adverse weather conditions.

His Excellency Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), remarked on the significance of the project, stating, “The successful completion of the North Runway Rehabilitation Project at Zayed International Airport reflects not only the strategic foresight of Abu Dhabi Airports but also the UAE’s dedication to innovation and sustainable growth in the aviation sector. This project reaffirms our commitment to enhancing the global standing of UAE airports, in line with both the GCAA and national vision for long-term prosperity.”

Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Abu Dhabi Airports, emphasized the meticulous planning and collaboration that contributed to the project’s success, stating, “The successful completion of the Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project ahead of schedule is a direct result of meticulous planning, effective stakeholder collaboration, and a steadfast dedication to operational excellence. This enhanced infrastructure will enable us to effectively manage continuous increases in air traffic demand and optimize airport throughput at AUH."

With the reopening of the Northern Runway, Zayed International Airport can now return to dual-runway operations, allowing it to better meet the increasing demand from airlines. During the runway closure, Abu Dhabi Airports adeptly managed operations at AUH through the Southern Runway, maintaining seamless daily operations and ensuring continuity and safety without any disruptions.

This achievement illustrates Abu Dhabi Airports’ commitment to developing aviation infrastructure that adheres to the highest safety and operational standards. The enhancements made during the rehabilitation project further solidify Zayed International Airport's position as a leading global aviation hub, poised to accommodate the growing needs of air traffic while prioritizing safety and sustainability.
