Sir Bani Yas Airport is located 250 kilometers southwest of Abu Dhabi’s coast, in the Al Dhafra Region. It is the main airport serving the island, a well-known eco-tourism destination. The rehabilitation project focused on several key upgrades to the airport’s airfield.

One of the major improvements included the complete reconstruction of the runway, taxiways, and apron pavements. This was done to make sure the airport is safer and can run more efficiently. The lighting systems at the airport were also fully upgraded to improve night operations and visibility for staff working on the ground.
His Excellency Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), mentioned that the UAE is working hard to maintain its position as a global leader in aviation. He explained that this project at Sir Bani Yas Airport is part of the country’s efforts to improve infrastructure and offer the best services while supporting sustainable tourism and economic growth.

Elena Sorlini, the Managing Director and CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports, also praised the completion of the rehabilitation work. She emphasized that the successful collaboration with the General Civil Aviation Authority is a key factor in improving the nation’s aviation infrastructure. She said these improvements would help the airport handle more visitors and support the continued growth of Al Dhafra Region as a major eco-tourism hub.

One of the key upgrades was the widening of the runway. This allows larger aircraft (Code 4E) to land, which is important because more people are visiting Sir Bani Yas Island. The lighting system has also been upgraded to high-performance LED lights, which are part of Abu Dhabi Airport’s efforts to be more sustainable. The new Airfield Lighting Control System (ALCS) also makes it easier to manage and control the airport’s lights to ensure safe operations.

Additionally, the airport’s weather observation systems have been upgraded with the latest technology. This means more accurate weather information is available, which helps with planning and safety. The construction of new service and emergency roadways will also improve access during urgent situations.

Abu Dhabi Airports continues to invest in the aviation infrastructure of the Al Dhafra Region to meet the growing number of tourists. The completion of this rehabilitation project is part of the ongoing efforts to promote eco-tourism and sustainable growth in the region. It ensures that visitors from around the world will be able to enjoy the unique beauty and wildlife of Sir Bani Yas Island safely, easily, and conveniently.
