Los Angeles: At least two lives were lost in a tragic midair crash on Wednesday morning at Marana Regional Airport in Arizona. The incident involved two small planes—a Cessna 172S and a Lancair 360 MK II—affecting, at least, two people, according to officials.
Citing the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the two aircraft collided as they flew near runway 12. The investigation into the causes of the crash is being led by the NTSB. In a report published on X (formerly Twitter), the agency said the Cessna 172S was able to land safely without incident. The Lancair 360 MK II, however, crashed off runway 3 and burst into flames upon impact.
Emergency personnel, including the Marana Police Department, responded to the crash site to evaluate the situation. Authorities have not issued information regarding the victims, and they do not know if any other people were on board the aircraft in the accident.

Recent Increase in Air Crashes
This midair crash is the most recent among a series of air accidents within recent weeks across the United States and Canada.
Only weeks prior, a helicopter and an American Airlines commercial airliner crashed into each other midair over Washington, D.C., killing three crew members and 64 passengers. At roughly the same moment, a small medical flight plane crashed into Philadelphia buildings, killing seven people.
On Monday, a Delta Air Lines flight in Toronto made headlines after it skidded along the runway in flames, flipping over before coming to a stop. Fortunately, all 80 passengers on board survived, though many suffered injuries.
Earlier this month, a private plane with ten passengers on board went down in Alaska after it lost altitude and went off radar. Unfortunately, no one survived. Another accident on February 10 involved two private airplanes colliding at Scottsdale Airport in Arizona, with one person being killed and four others injured.
The shocking rate of aviation accidents has sparked alarm within the industry. On Wednesday, US aviation officials called on Congress to authorize emergency funding to upgrade air traffic control technology and enhance staffing to avert future tragedies.
Investigations into the Marana midair collision and other recent crashes are continuing. Authorities are seeking to ascertain if pilot error, mechanical failure, or other reasons were involved in these tragic incidents.
