The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) is hosting an important meeting called the 7th Annual Meeting of the Global Research and Expertise Network for Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR-GREN). This meeting is happening from January 20 to 22, 2025. It is the first time such a big event is being held in the Middle East. This shows how serious the UAE and Abu Dhabi are about helping to stop the spread of this disease by the year 2030. This effort is part of a global plan made by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).

Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) is a disease that affects animals like sheep and goats. Stopping this disease will help protect animals, support farmers, and make sure there is enough food for people. More than 80 experts, researchers, and leaders from 30 countries have come together for this meeting. They are talking about how to fight this disease and sharing new ideas to protect animals and make farming better.

ADAFSA has a special center called the Camel Disease Reference Centre. This center works with countries, scientists, and labs to solve problems that hurt animals and food supplies. At the meeting, there are representatives from famous organizations, including research centers in France, the UK, and China. Groups like the European Union, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and the African Union are also taking part. Companies that make vaccines and testing tools are there too.

Over three days, participants will share knowledge on topics such as tracking the disease, testing for it, and making better vaccines. They are also looking at new ideas like heat-resistant vaccines that can be used in hot places. The goal is to work together to stop this disease from spreading.

Dr. Arif Kalantar, who is part of ADAFSA, said this meeting shows that Abu Dhabi is a leader in research and innovation. He also spoke about the important work being done by ADAFSA’s Camel Disease Reference Centre. This center has created a special test to find out if camels can spread the disease to smaller animals. This helps scientists figure out better ways to protect animals and control the disease.

Dr. Kalantar hopes this meeting will lead to new ideas to fight animal diseases. He also believes it will help build partnerships between countries and support efforts to link human, animal, and environmental health. This connection, called the "One Health" approach, helps improve food security for people everywhere.

The meeting has many important guests, including members of the PPR Advisory Committee and top researchers from around the world. By working together, everyone at this meeting hopes to take big steps toward stopping this disease and protecting animals, farmers, and food supplies worldwide.
