In 2024, the European Capitals of Culture title is jointly bestowed upon Bodo in Norway, Tartu in Estonia, and Bad Ischl in Austria. These diverse locations, each with its unique cultural heritage, will play host to a myriad of events and projects aimed at showcasing their rich traditions and contemporary expressions. The Austrian town of Bad Ischl, nestled in the scenic Salzkammergut region, has long been a magnet for tourists, attracting visitors with its picturesque landscapes, historic charm, and ties to Austrian nobility. In the year ahead, Bad Ischl, along with 22 neighboring communities, will embark on a cultural journey, exploring themes ranging from climate change and historical legacies to the consequences of overtourism.
Program curator Elisabeth Schweeger emphasizes the intention to offer a nuanced exploration of the region, avoiding a superficial celebration and instead delving into both the positive and negative aspects of its identity. The curated program is set to commence with a grand opening concert on January 20, featuring the renowned Eurovision Song Contest winner, Conchita Wurst, who hails from the Salzkammergut region. Wurst will share the stage with rappers and a thousand-strong yodeling choir, setting the tone for a year-long cultural celebration.
A central theme in Bad Ischl's cultural narrative is the significance of salt, often referred to as "white gold," which has been mined in the Salzkammergut area for over 7,000 years. The salt mining tradition has profoundly shaped the region's identity, and now, cultural endeavors seek to add another essential element: a focus on arts and culture. The year's projects include an exhibition by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, exploring the connection between contemporary art and the region's salt mining heritage. Exhibitions will also address sensitive topics such as looted art during the Nazi era, shedding light on historical complexities.
The European Cultural Capital designation is not without its challenges, particularly in regions like Bad Ischl, where the population questions the necessity of such a distinction. Yet, more than 85% of events are locally and regionally sponsored, offering an opportunity for the community to critically reflect on its history and culture.
Moving to Estonia, Tartu, the second-largest city in the country, assumes its role as a European Capital of Culture for 2024. With a population of close to 100,000, Tartu has historically been regarded as the heart and soul of Estonia. As a center for science, education, and culture, Tartu holds a special place in Estonia's cultural evolution. The city's rich history includes being the birthplace of the Estonian state, signified by the signing of the Peace Treaty of Dorpat in 1920. Tartu will embrace its cultural legacy with a program titled "Arts of Survival," featuring over 1,000 events.
The program's launch on January 26 will include an anthem celebrating Tartu as the "Young Blood City." Events such as "Kissing Tartu" and "Naked Truth," an opinion festival held in saunas, aim to provide unique cultural experiences. Notably, Tartu Pride in August will coincide with the legalization of same-sex marriage in Estonia, adding a significant cultural milestone to the year's festivities.
In northern Norway, the city of Bodo takes center stage as the third European Cultural Capital of 2024. Situated above the Arctic Circle, Bodo aims to showcase not only its breathtaking Arctic nature but also its vibrant cultural scene. With a focus on sustainability, Bodo intends to host "the world's most sustainable concert" titled "Pure Music." The Sami, the region's Indigenous people, will be a focal point, with a multi-part musical theater production dedicated to their culture.
Bodo2024 is poised to be the largest cultural project in northern Norway to date, featuring over 1,000 events. The emphasis on sustainability aligns with the city's commitment to responsible cultural engagement. Events throughout the year will explore the intersection of art, nature, and community. Notable German collaborations, including an opening ceremony with the Berlin artist collective Phase7, add an international dimension to the celebrations.
In summary, the designation of European Capitals of Culture for 2024 brings attention to the diverse cultural landscapes of Bodo, Tartu, and Bad Ischl. Each location aims to offer a nuanced exploration of its identity, weaving together historical legacies, contemporary expressions, and international collaborations. The year promises a vibrant tapestry of cultural events, inviting locals and visitors alike to engage with the rich heritage and dynamic cultural scenes of these European cities.
