US, Russia, Ukraine Hold Talks on Black Sea Ceasefire

A team from the United States will meet with Russian officials on Monday to talk about stopping the fighting in the Black Sea and finding a way to end the war in Ukraine. Before this, the US team had a meeting with Ukrainian officials on Sunday to prepare for the talks with Russia.

These talks are part of US President Donald Trump’s plan to stop the war, which has been going on for three years. Last week, President Trump spoke separately with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin. He wants to help both sides find a way to peace.

The US team is led by Andrew Peek from the White House National Security Council and Michael Anton from the State Department. First, they met with Ukrainian officials, and now they are set to talk with Russian officials.

The US government says the main goal of the talks is to stop fighting in the Black Sea. If there is peace in the sea, trade ships will be able to move freely again without danger.

The US team, the Russian team, and the Ukrainian team are all in the same place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for the talks. They will also talk about where to set the border between Ukraine and Russian-controlled areas. This includes rules to check if both sides follow the agreement, the possibility of peacekeepers in the area, and stopping both sides from moving their troops forward.

Another big topic in the talks is the return of Ukrainian children taken to Russia. Ukraine has said that Russia took thousands of children from their families and moved them to Russian areas. Many countries have spoken against this.

Russia is sending Grigory Karasin, a former diplomat, and Sergei Beseda, an adviser in Russia’s security agency, to represent them.

Ukraine’s team is led by Defence Minister Rustem Umerov. He said after Sunday’s meeting that the US and Ukraine also talked about how to protect important buildings like power stations from attacks.

These talks are happening because Russia made some gains in the war earlier in 2024. Seeing this, President Trump changed the US approach. He stopped giving military aid to Ukraine and started talking directly with Russia. He told Ukraine to take steps toward ending the war.

A US special envoy, Steve Witkoff, visited Moscow in March and met with President Putin. Some NATO countries worry that a peace deal might make Russia feel strong and attack other countries in the future. But Witkoff disagreed, saying that Russia is not trying to take over all of Europe. He said this situation is very different from World War Two.
