US Congressman Hints at 'Space War' to Address Russia-China Tensions

Ken Calvert, a Republican congressman from California who chairs the House Appropriations defense subcommittee, recently spoke about the increasing importance of space exploration and the potential for conflicts in outer space. He suggested that the United States military, particularly the Space Force, may need to become involved in lunar missions to counter perceived threats from other countries, such as China and Russia.

Calvert expressed concerns about China's space ambitions, particularly its plans to establish a base on the moon. He warned that China's actions could lead to militarization of the moon, posing potential challenges for the United States and its allies. He referenced a video released by the Chinese National Space Administration outlining their intentions to construct a lunar base as part of the International Lunar Research Station project.

Furthermore, Calvert highlighted reports suggesting that Russia may be considering placing a large bomb, potentially one megaton in size, in low-Earth orbit. Such an action could have catastrophic consequences, creating a radiation field that would threaten satellites and other spacecraft in orbit.

Calvert stressed the importance of the United States maintaining a strong presence in space to address these emerging threats. He suggested that the Space Force could play a crucial role in protecting American interests in space and ensuring the security of space-based assets. Calvert's remarks underscored the growing recognition of space as a strategic domain and the need for robust defenses to safeguard against potential adversaries' actions.

Overall, Calvert's comments reflect the increasing complexities and challenges associated with space exploration and security in an era of growing competition among global powers. As space becomes more accessible and valuable for economic and strategic purposes, nations must navigate these dynamics carefully to protect their interests and ensure the peaceful use of outer space.
