In response to escalating violence targeting foreign students in Kyrgyzstan, the Indian government has issued an advisory urging its citizens in the country to remain indoors for their safety. The advisory comes in the wake of reports of mob attacks, particularly targeting Pakistani students residing in hostels. The Indian Consulate emphasized the importance of staying indoors and provided a 24x7 contact number for students to reach out in case of emergencies. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar echoed this sentiment, urging Indian students to maintain regular contact with the embassy.
The situation arose following the circulation of videos depicting a confrontation between Kyrgyz and Egyptian students on May 13. While initial reports suggested casualties, including fatalities among Pakistani students, official sources have not confirmed any deaths. However, there have been instances of hostels, primarily housing medical university students from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, being targeted by mobs. Fortunately, no Indian students have been harmed in these attacks.

The Pakistan embassy in Kyrgyzstan has also been actively engaged, dispelling rumors of fatalities and providing updates on the situation. Despite social media speculation regarding the deaths and assaults of Pakistani students, no concrete reports have surfaced. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grave concern over the attacks and instructed the ambassador to extend all necessary assistance to affected students. He assured continuous monitoring of the situation to ensure the safety of Pakistani nationals in Kyrgyzstan.
The underlying tension appears to stem from issues surrounding the presence of migrants, particularly those from South Asia, in Kyrgyzstan. The incident highlights broader concerns regarding the treatment and safety of international students in the country. With an estimated 15,000 Indian students in Kyrgyzstan, the Indian government faces the challenge of ensuring the well-being of its citizens amidst the volatile situation. The exact number of Indian students in Bishkek, where the attacks occurred, remains unclear, adding to the complexity of the situation.
The need for swift diplomatic action and enhanced security measures to safeguard the lives of foreign students has become paramount. The Indian government, along with its counterparts in Pakistan, is actively engaged in addressing the crisis and ensuring the protection of its citizens abroad. The incident underscores the importance of fostering a secure and inclusive environment for students pursuing education in foreign countries. As investigations continue and tensions persist, efforts to mitigate the underlying issues fueling such violence are essential to prevent future occurrences and promote international cooperation and understanding.
