Meta Platforms announced on Thursday that it will start testing a new feature called "Community Notes" in the United States on March 18. This comes more than two months after Meta stopped its previous program that used fact-checkers to review posts on its social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram.

The "Community Notes" feature lets users help check the accuracy of posts by adding their own notes or corrections. If someone sees a post that they believe is false or misleading, they can provide extra information to make it clearer or more truthful. The goal is to let the community work together to ensure that the information shared on Meta's platforms is more accurate.

Previously, Meta worked with outside organizations to fact-check posts. If a post was found to be misleading, it would get a warning, and fewer people would see it. But in December 2023, Meta decided to stop using third-party fact-checkers. The company said this method wasn't working as well as they hoped.

With "Community Notes," Meta is allowing users to be more involved. Instead of relying only on outside fact-checkers, users will be able to flag content they think is wrong and offer corrections. This new system is meant to be more open and give people more control over what they see.

Meta’s move to "Community Notes" comes as social media companies face growing concerns about false information being shared online. The company believes that letting users help improve content will create a more reliable and transparent way to address misleading information.

The feature will begin on March 18, and Meta will watch how well it works. The company hopes this new tool will help make social media a safer place with more truthful information. It also shows Meta’s ongoing effort to improve the way it handles misinformation and to give users a stronger role in managing what they see online.
