Swedish Officials Blame Deadly Roller Coaster Accident on Weak Replacement Parts

Swedish authorities investigating the tragic roller coaster accident at Grona Lund, the country's oldest amusement park in Stockholm, have concluded that the incident last year resulted from serious lapses in the testing and installation of new parts for the ride. The Swedish Accident Investigation Authority revealed on Friday that the roller coaster, known as Jetline, derailed due to deficiencies in the design, manufacturing, and testing of newly installed support arms for its trains. These components, crucial for the ride's safety, were found to be inadequately robust.

The accident occurred on June 25, when the roller coaster, carrying 11 passengers, experienced a catastrophic failure. The front of the train unexpectedly left the tracks, causing one car to tilt dangerously. Tragically, a woman in her 30s was thrown from the ride and tragically lost her life. Additionally, two other passengers fell from the train, one of whom sustained serious injuries while the other suffered minor injuries. Seven other riders sustained minor injuries as well.

In response to the severity of the incident, authorities have launched a criminal investigation into potential negligence or wrongdoing. Christer B. Jarlås, a prosecutor overseeing the case, stated that extensive interrogations, technical examinations of the train carriages, and material analyses have been conducted. However, no definitive timeline has been set for when decisions regarding charges may be made.

The Jetline roller coaster, stretching 800 meters (2,600 feet) in length, first opened in 1988 and underwent renovations in 2000. It reaches heights of up to 30 meters (98 feet) and speeds of 90 kilometers (56 miles) per hour, making it a popular attraction at Grona Lund, which has been entertaining visitors since its establishment in 1883.
