Dubai’s Crown Prince, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, captured one of the most striking moments of this week’s severe weather when a bolt of lightning hit the top of the Burj Khalifa. The brief but powerful clip, shared on his social media accounts, shows the world’s tallest tower illuminated for a split second as thunder rumbled and rain poured over the city. The dark sky, combined with the echo of rainfall and thunder, made the moment both dramatic and captivating.
Sheikh Hamdan, popularly known as Fazza, is widely admired for his passion for photography, nature, and adventure. He kept his caption simple—writing “Dubai” followed by rain and lightning emojis—allowing the moment to speak for itself. Alongside being Crown Prince, he also holds key roles as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE. He has served as Crown Prince since 2008 and has become an influential figure known for his leadership style, cultural engagement, and communication with residents and youth.
Severe Weather Sweeps Across the UAE
The lightning strike occurred during a spell of unstable weather that affected several parts of the UAE. The National Centre of Meteorology issued multiple warnings for heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and even hail in select regions. According to reports, the country entered the peak phase of the ‘Al Bashayer’ low-pressure system on December 18. Officials explained that the extension of a low-pressure system from the Red Sea encouraged dense cloud formation and rainfall of varying intensities.
Residents witnessed strong winds, reduced visibility, and scattered thunderstorms, prompting authorities to advise caution on roads and near open areas. Emergency teams remained on alert as rain continued throughout the day and night.
Video Goes Viral on Social Media
The Crown Prince’s post quickly circulated across social media platforms, drawing thousands of reactions from residents and international viewers who were stunned by the rare and visually striking sight of lightning touching the iconic tower. Many commented on the beauty of the moment and the power of nature, while others noted the symbolic image of resilience against turbulent weather.
The Burj Khalifa: An Engineering Triumph
Towering at 829.8 meters (2,722 feet), the Burj Khalifa remains the architectural centerpiece of Dubai’s skyline. It holds several world records, including:
The tallest building in the world
The tallest free-standing structure
The highest occupied floor
The skyscraper features 163 floors and multiple observation decks on levels 124, 125, and 148, where visitors can experience sweeping views of the city. Its façade includes more than 26,000 specially designed glass panels, built to withstand intense temperatures and strong winds—elements often intensified during storms.
Construction began in 2004 and required nearly six years to complete. It involved more than 12,000 skilled workers and engineers, with a total project cost estimated at $1.5 billion. Today, the tower remains a symbol of the UAE’s ambition, innovation, and global presence.
A Powerful Intersection of Nature and Architecture
The lightning strike against the world’s tallest tower served as a reminder of nature’s unpredictability and the spectacular interplay between modern infrastructure and the environment. While storms occasionally pass through the region, such visually dramatic moments—captured over one of the world’s most recognisable landmarks—are rare.
Sheikh Hamdan’s video not only documented an extraordinary sight but also highlighted the beauty and force of the natural world, even in a city known for its cutting-edge engineering and urban landscape.
