Maryam Al Hammadi has made history as the first Emirati woman to serve as an air traffic control officer (ATCO) in Sharjah. Her accomplishment underscores her exceptional skills and commitment to her profession, enabling her to complete the rigorous training program mandated by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and tailored to the demands of her role in a remarkably short timeframe.

Over the course of three years, Al Hammadi has diligently pursued and successfully completed various courses and certifications, including ICAO 051, ICAO 052, ATCO Pre-OJT, ATCO OJT, and the ATCO proficiency testing exam. Her swift progress exemplifies the effectiveness of the Emiratisation program at the Department of Civil Aviation in Sharjah (DCA), which prioritizes providing equal opportunities for both male and female citizens to excel in diverse fields. Moreover, the department is dedicated to offering continuous support and training to foster skill development and professional growth among its workforce.

In her role at the air traffic control tower at Sharjah Airport, Al Hammadi efficiently manages aircraft operations, ensuring the safe and smooth flow of flights. Notably, the Air Control Department at Sharjah Airport handled over 104,000 flights last year, averaging 364 flights per day.

Sheikh Khalid bin Essam Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Civil Aviation Department, commended DCA's commitment to empowering women and expressed pride in Al Hammadi's groundbreaking achievement. He emphasized that her appointment aligns with the directives and vision of the nation's leadership to promote gender equality and foster women's active participation in driving sustainable economic development.

Reflecting on her milestone, Maryam Al Hammadi expressed her pride in being the first Emirati ATCO in Sharjah and acknowledged the increased responsibility that comes with her role. She is determined to leverage her position to make meaningful contributions to the UAE's aviation sector, furthering its growth and success.
