In a significant moment for Feyenoord, manager Robin van Persie has justified his choice to give his son, Shaqueel, a senior debut during their Europa League clash with Celtic, asserting that the decision stemmed from his duty as a coach rather than as his father. The Dutch squad unfortunately faced a 3-1 loss at home on Thursday, with Shaqueel entering the field late in the match.
Nineteen-year-old Shaqueel van Persie landed his first professional contract with Feyenoord in 2022 and recently made the transition to the first-team lineup. After remaining unused during last Sunday’s Eredivisie defeat against NEC Nijmegen, he took the pitch four days later against Celtic, replacing defender Jordan Lotomba in the 81st minute as his team trailed by two goals.
Following the match, Robin van Persie commented, “I made that call as a coach, not as a dad, because we needed a goal. Shaqueel is a player who can score from all angles. That was the reason I brought him on.” However, just a minute after his son’s introduction, Feyenoord conceded a third goal from Benjamin Nygren, solidifying Celtic’s 3-1 victory.
Looking back on this poignant moment, Van Persie reflected, “From a father’s perspective, when your son makes his debut, it’s always special. But I wasn’t focused on savoring that moment. My job was to guide the team, just like Shaqueel did on the pitch.”
As Feyenoord prepares to bounce back in the Eredivisie against SC Telstar on Sunday, they aim to regain momentum and let their young talents shine through, with Shaqueel already making strides at the senior level.
This well-planned debut demonstrates Feyenoord’s dedication to developing young talent while upholding professional standards, even with familial connections. Despite the match against Celtic ending in a loss, Shaqueel van Persie’s inaugural senior appearance marks the promising outset of his career in Dutch football.
