A strong winter storm began its assault on the United States on Friday, unleashing significant snow accumulation across many regions throughout the weekend. The system caused widespread disruption, leading to blocked roads, canceled flights, and blackouts affecting over half a million households and businesses. By Monday, while the snowfall diminished, residents faced an enduring cold wave anticipated to linger for several extended days.
On Tuesday, cities mobilized emergency services to aid vulnerable populations, with a particular focus on the homeless community. As temperatures fell, more than 550,000 properties remained without power despite the improving weather conditions.
New York City reported 10 fatalities linked to the storm during its most frigid spell in nearly a decade, with temperatures dropping to a severe 8 degrees Fahrenheit (around -13 degrees Celsius). Officials have remarked that some of the deceased had previously interacted with shelter services, but it's uncertain if all were homeless. In light of the extreme conditions, the city has postponed its annual homeless count to prioritize getting individuals inside safely.
Since January 19, nearly 500 of an estimated 4,000 homeless individuals residing on the streets and subway stations have been relocated to shelters. Outreach teams are closely monitoring approximately 350 people at high risk who may have medical vulnerabilities.
In Nashville, Tennessee, over 135,000 residents remained without electricity, with forecasts predicting a drop to 6 degrees Fahrenheit (-14 degrees Celsius) early Wednesday and dangerously low wind chills. The local three homeless shelters and two overflow centers are operating at full capacity, as emergency teams strive to ensure public safety.
The local rescue mission, which usually accommodates around 400 nightly, has seen numbers balloon to approximately 7,000 during this cold streak, providing food, clothing, and shelter for those seeking refuge. Staff has assured that no one in need will be turned away during such severe weather.
Fatalities attributed to the storm across the US include hypothermia, exposure to the harsh environment, and heart attacks linked to strenuous snow removal. Disturbingly, three young boys in Texas lost their lives after falling through ice on a pond, while another individual succumbed to hypothermia in an abandoned gas station. Other cold exposure-related deaths have been recorded in states such as Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Michigan.
At present, nearly 200 million Americans remain under winter weather warnings until at least February 1, as meteorologists track the possibility of another winter storm affecting the eastern US later this week.
Authorities continue to urge community members to take precautions and check in on neighbors, particularly those who are most at risk, as the nation grapples with this unprecedented winter event.
