Powerful storms swept across a large part of the central-eastern United States overnight, leaving behind destruction, heartbreak, and at least seven deaths. Officials said on Thursday that more dangerous weather could still be on the way.
The storms stretched from Arkansas all the way to Ohio. They brought heavy rain, strong winds, and dozens of tornadoes. Weather experts warned that the bad weather could continue for several more days.
Western Tennessee was one of the worst-hit areas. State and local officials confirmed five deaths there. In Fayette County, a father and his teenage daughter lost their lives when a tornado flipped over their modular home. The mother and two others were taken to the hospital. Emergency teams pulled the mother from the wreckage.

Photos and videos shared online showed how bad the damage was—homes were destroyed, trees were torn out of the ground, power lines were down, and cars were flipped over.
The National Weather Service (NWS) gave a serious warning, saying the country could be in for “a multi-day, possibly historic heavy rainfall event” that might cause dangerous and life-threatening floods through Saturday.
Two more people died in other states. In Indiana, a man died after his car hit a power line that had fallen during the storm. In Missouri, a local fire chief lost his life in a storm-related event, though details were not shared.
Because of the storms, schools were closed in many places, including in Nashville, the capital of Tennessee.
In Kentucky, Governor Andy Beshear warned residents before the storms arrived, saying, “This could be one of the most dangerous weather events we’ve been warned about.”
The NWS in Louisville, Kentucky, said that more strong winds and tornadoes were possible through Thursday night.
As of Thursday, around 230,000 people had no electricity across the central-eastern U.S., according to the website PowerOutage.us.
And more bad weather could be coming. The NWS in Little Rock, Arkansas, said that “all types of dangerous weather” might happen, including large hail, strong winds, and even more tornadoes.
The NWS in Lincoln, Illinois, also posted a warning on X (formerly Twitter), saying people should stay alert as more storms with hail and strong winds were expected into Friday.
