France is grappling with the aftermath of severe flooding that has affected central regions, marking what officials describe as the most significant flood event in 40 years. On Friday, Prime Minister Michel Barnier reported that firefighters and rescue personnel have conducted around 2,300 operations, with many classified as lifesaving efforts.

During his visit to the French authorities' crisis center in Paris, Barnier emphasized the unprecedented nature of the violent rain experienced recently, noting that over 1,000 individuals were evacuated from their homes, with most returning on the same day.
The prime minister commended the implementation of a newly tested alert system that successfully sent out text messages advising residents in affected areas to postpone or cancel their planned trips and to seek shelter. This proactive approach aims to minimize risks and enhance public safety during such emergencies.
According to Meteo France, the national weather certain localities in the regions of Ardeche and Lozere experienced staggering rainfall amounts, with reports indicating up to 700 millimeters (27.5 inches) falling within just 48 hours.
The extreme weather conditions have caused significant disruptions to transportation networks, with the national railway operator SNCF halting regional train services between Lyon and Saint-Étienne due to impassable tracks. Officials stated that local train operations would continue to face disruptions for several days as recovery efforts proceed. Additionally, a major highway connecting the two cities was submerged and remained closed on Friday.
While Meteo France lifted its red alert for severe weather on Friday morning, it continued to caution residents in southwestern France about the possibility of further heavy rain and subsequent flooding, urging vigilance as the situation develops.
