The wedding season is just around the corner, and this year’s biggest fashion trend is giving the saree a brand-new twist. Designers and stylists say pairing sarees with jackets is the latest way to mix elegance with power dressing. The classic drape, loved for its grace and tradition, is now turning into a modern fashion statement that’s both stylish and practical.
Once worn mainly at festive events, the saree is now being reinvented for women who want to stand out. Celebrities like Sonam Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar have already made this look popular by pairing designer jackets with their sarees. Fashion experts say this mix of traditional and modern styles is here to stay.
The New Saree Look: A Mix of Tradition and Confidence
Nishit Gupta, director and co-founder of fashion label Kalki, explained that the “saree-with-jacket” trend is a natural step forward for Indian fashion.
“The jacket-over-saree look balances tradition with modern design. It adds power and confidence to the saree while keeping its timeless charm,” he said.
Gupta believes that the modern Indian woman wants clothes that are stylish but also comfortable. “It’s no longer about just looking elegant. It’s about feeling strong and independent in what you wear,” he added.
Fashion Meets Functionality
Manjula Tiwari, Managing Director and CEO of Ancestry, agrees that this trend brings structure and flow together. “Jackets over sarees reimagine traditional dressing through a fresh, modern lens,” she said.
She explained that the look works for all types of occasions. “Whether it’s a brocade jacket over silk for weddings or a floral cape over a pastel saree for daytime events, every combination tells a new story,” said Tiwari. “It’s bold, elegant, and individualistic.”
Designers say this style not only looks great but also solves a practical problem — staying warm during winter weddings. The jacket adds a fashionable layer without taking away from the saree’s beauty.
The Trend of Power Dressing
At Dash and Dot, a well-known fashion brand, founder Ashray Gujral describes the saree-with-jacket trend as “power dressing rooted in tradition.”
“It’s confident, unexpected, and still deeply Indian,” Gujral said. His brand’s festive collection includes metallic blazers, pleated drapes, and shiny knits — showing how the modern woman wants to look glamorous but grounded in Indian culture.
According to Gujral, women today prefer clothes that make them feel both stylish and strong. “The jacket gives the saree an edge. It’s about showing that you can be traditional and powerful at the same time,” he added.
Why Women Love It
Stylists say the saree-with-jacket look is popular because it’s versatile. It can be worn in many ways — from simple office wear to grand wedding parties.
For a minimal look, pair a linen saree with a crisp cotton jacket. For parties or receptions, wear a shiny silk saree with an embroidered jacket. The combination allows women to express their personal style while keeping the comfort of traditional clothing.
Another reason for its growing popularity is that it suits all age groups. Young women see it as trendy and chic, while older women like the extra comfort and coverage it provides.
Perfect for Winter Weddings
With winter weddings coming up, fashion experts say this is the perfect time to try the saree-with-jacket look. The extra layer keeps you warm without needing heavy shawls. Plus, it gives a sophisticated, modern appearance that photographs beautifully.
“The look is all about balance,” said Gupta. “You can be wrapped in a saree that feels classic while wearing a jacket that feels modern. It’s comfort meeting couture.”
A Style That’s Here to Stay
Fashion observers believe this trend will continue beyond this wedding season. The combination of Indian textiles with Western-style jackets represents how modern Indian fashion is changing. It’s about mixing cultures, creativity, and comfort.
Experts say that the saree-with-jacket trend is not just a passing phase — it’s part of a larger movement where Indian fashion is becoming more global. Women today want clothes that celebrate tradition but still feel new and relevant.
