Russian Strikes Kill 12 People in Eastern Ukraine

Russian forces hit the center of Dobropillia in the Donetsk region of Ukraine. At least 11 people were killed, and 30 others were injured, according to Ukraine’s emergency service. On Saturday morning, another attack with drones killed one person and hurt seven others in the city of Bogodukhiv in the Kharkiv region.

The Russian attacks came just days before talks between Ukraine and the U.S. were set to begin in Saudi Arabia. These talks aimed to find a way to end the war. The U.S. President, Donald Trump, had warned Russia with new sanctions and tariffs over its ongoing attacks on Ukraine. But Trump also said he might find it easier to talk to Russia than Ukraine to end the war.

Trump expressed his frustration with Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, during a meeting at the White House. He also froze U.S. aid to Ukraine to push for peace talks. “I’m finding it more difficult frankly to deal with Ukraine, and they don’t have the cards,” Trump said. “It may be easier dealing with Russia.”

Trump also said that he was thinking about putting heavy banking sanctions and tariffs on Russia because of the bombing of Ukraine, especially after a large attack on Ukrainian energy facilities. Trump urged both Russia and Ukraine to sit down and talk before it’s too late.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio talked with Ukraine’s foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, on Friday. Rubio told Sybiha that Trump wants the war to end quickly and that all sides should work for a lasting peace.

Zelensky is scheduled to meet Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Monday. The day after, Zelensky and U.S. officials will hold new talks in Saudi Arabia. Zelensky said he and his team are in Saudi Arabia to work with the U.S. to find peace.

Zelensky also called for both Russia and Ukraine to stop attacking each other's critical infrastructure. He believes this should be the first step to real peace. However, Russia has already said it will not accept a temporary ceasefire.

On Saturday, Russia said it shot down 31 Ukrainian drones. Most of these drones were over the Krasnodar Krai area. A Ukrainian drone also attacked a Russian oil refinery, but it was shot down before it could cause serious damage. Another drone was destroyed over the facility. The governor of Leningrad said the structure of one of the refinery’s tanks was damaged by falling debris.

In Belgorod, a district near the Ukraine border, a civilian was hurt by another drone attack. The local governor confirmed the injury.

These attacks are happening as the European Union worries about the U.S. pulling away from the conflict. In response, EU leaders have agreed to improve their defense systems. However, the U.S. has said talks with Ukraine are still moving forward, and efforts to reach a ceasefire with Russia are still ongoing despite Trump’s public comments against Zelensky.
