On Monday, the emergencies ministry of Russia reported a Mi-8 helicopter crash in Lake Onega, situated in the northern Karelia region. The helicopter, assigned to the emergencies ministry, was on a training flight with three crew members on board. The ministry shared information on the Telegram messaging app, stating that the helicopter was operated by an experienced crew with extensive flight hours.

The incident occurred after the helicopter disappeared from radar late on Sunday. The wreckage was subsequently located approximately 11 km (6.8 miles) from the Lake Onega shoreline, which is the second-largest lake in Europe. The crash site is at a depth of 50 m (164 feet).

In response to the crash, an underwater search operation is underway. The emergencies ministry reported deploying divers and a remote-controlled underwater vehicle to assist in the search and potential recovery efforts. As of the statement, there was no information provided regarding the condition or whereabouts of the crew members.

The Karelia region, where the crash took place, is geographically divided into two parts: the Finnish Karelia region and the Russian Republic of Karelia. The incident occurred in the Russian Republic of Karelia, located in the northwestern part of Russia between the White and Baltic seas. The region is known for its lakes and forests, and Lake Onega is one of the prominent features.

The ongoing search and rescue efforts highlight the urgency and gravity of the situation as authorities work to determine the fate of the helicopter's crew members and gather details about the circumstances leading to the crash
