Russian City Urges Mass Evacuation: Floods

In Orenburg, Russia, authorities have issued a dire plea for residents to evacuate immediately as floodwaters rapidly rise. The situation escalated due to major rivers overflowing from melting snow. The Ural River, central to Orenburg, surged to alarming levels, reaching 11.43 meters (over 37 feet) from the previous day's 10.87 meters. Sergei Salmin, Orenburg's mayor, stressed the gravity of the situation via the Telegram app, urging citizens to heed evacuation orders.

The urgency stems from the extreme danger posed by the flooding. Within a span of 10 hours, the water level surged by 40 centimeters (1.31 feet), reaching a critical height of 1,143 centimeters. Residents were advised to gather essential documents, medications, and belongings before abandoning their homes.

Orenburg's deputy mayor, Alexei Kudinov, reported that overnight flooding affected over 360 houses and nearly 1,000 plots of land. The deluge is anticipated to peak within the day and gradually recede in the following 48 hours.

Simultaneously, neighboring regions face similar crises. In Kurgan, the village of Kaminskoye is undergoing evacuation as the Tobol River swells, rising by 1.4 meters (4.59 feet) overnight. Kurgan's regional governor, Vadim Shumkov, warned of potential inundation in Kurgan city, home to 300,000 residents. Authorities are reinforcing dams in anticipation of further flooding.

The flood's impact extends beyond Russia, with neighboring Kazakhstan grappling with evacuations of 100,000 people due to rising water levels. The situation arose from warming temperatures causing rapid snowmelt and dislodging trapped water and mud.

The flood poses potential risks to vital infrastructure, including Kurgan's military-industrial complex, notably the Kurganmashzavod factory, which produces infantry fighting vehicles for the Russian army. Despite the looming threat, there have been no reports of the factory being affected thus far.
