The Moroccan Ministry of Industry and Trade has started an investigation into steel wires imported from Egypt and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This decision was made after some Moroccan companies presented evidence that steel wires from these countries are being sold at very low prices in Morocco, which is harming local businesses.
The investigation focuses on galvanized steel wires imported between January 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024. The Moroccan companies that filed the complaint compared the prices of these wires in Egypt and the UAE with the prices they were sold for in Morocco. They found a big price difference, which suggests that the steel wires might be sold at unfairly low prices, a practice known as "dumping."

In Egypt, a local market study supported these claims. For the UAE imports, the ministry compared the prices at which the wires were sold in Morocco with the prices they were sold for in the countries where they were made. The study showed that the price difference was too high and went beyond the legal limits for dumping.
The ministry also found that imports of these steel wires have increased a lot since 2020. Between 2020 and September 2024, imports went up by nearly 13,000%, from 112 tons to 14,699 tons. Compared to the total amount of steel wires used in Morocco, imports from Egypt and the UAE grew by over 13,000% in the same period.
The Moroccan companies that filed the complaint said these imports are causing problems for local businesses. They say that because of these cheap imports, local producers are losing market share and are in danger of not being able to survive.
The ministry carefully reviewed the evidence and agreed that the claims were serious enough to start an investigation.
Galvanized steel wires are used in many industries, such as agriculture, construction, and making things like wire mesh, fences, and car parts. They are important for many metal structures and other industrial uses.
