Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has opened a new 1,000-metre bridge that connects Hessa Street to Al Khail Road. This bridge is a major part of a big project to improve the roads in the area. The new bridge will help reduce the travel time from Hessa Street to Al Khail Road. Before, it used to take 15 minutes to travel this distance, but now it will only take 3 minutes. This improvement will make it easier for people to travel to important places like Dubai’s city centre and Dubai International Airport.

The Hessa Street development project covers a 4.5 km stretch of road, from its intersection with Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Khail Road. The project is already more than half complete, with 54% finished. RTA expects the whole project to be finished by the end of 2025. The improvements will help make the road network in Dubai stronger and meet the growing needs of the city’s population.
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General of the Roads and Transport Authority explained that this project is part of Dubai’s plan to improve infrastructure and keep up with the rapid growth of the city. He mentioned that the project is being carried out under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, along with the follow-up of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai.
One of the main features of the Hessa Street project is the doubling of its capacity. The road is being expanded from two lanes to four lanes in each direction. This will allow the road to handle up to 8,000 vehicles per hour. This expansion is very important as it will support the growing population in the surrounding areas. It is expected that more than 640,000 people will live in these areas by 2030. The development will also include a 13.5 km cycling track, which will make it easier for people to get around using bikes or scooters. The total cost of the project is around AED 689 million.
The Hessa Street development project includes four key intersections that will be upgraded to make traffic flow more smoothly. The first is at Hessa Street and Sheikh Zayed Road. Here, a new two-lane ramp will be built to help cars turn onto Hessa Street from Sheikh Zayed Road. This will help reduce traffic congestion and allow cars to move more easily.
The second intersection is at Hessa Street and First Al Khail Road. The bridge here will be expanded, adding more lanes to handle the increased traffic. The surface-level junction will also be improved to allow cars to move more freely. The third intersection is at Hessa Street and Al Asayel Street. The bridge here will be widened to four lanes, and the traffic lights will be upgraded to reduce delays.
The fourth intersection is at Hessa Street and Al Khail Road. This is an important junction, and it will be improved by adding a two-lane ramp that will make it easier for cars to travel northbound towards Sharjah.
Apart from road improvements, the project also includes 13.5 km of cycling and e-scooter tracks. These tracks will link several important areas, including Al Sufouh and Dubai Hills, and will help people travel to key metro stations. The tracks will also connect residential areas like Al Barsha and Barsha Heights, making it easier for people to get to places quickly.
An exciting part of the project is the construction of two unique bridges for cyclists and pedestrians. These bridges will cross over Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. The bridges will be 5 meters wide, with separate paths for cyclists and pedestrians. The cycling track will be 3 meters wide, while the pedestrian path will be 2 meters wide. These bridges will make it safer and easier for people to use the cycling tracks, and they will also look attractive with their modern designs.
This project is not only focused on cars but also on promoting sustainable transportation. By adding cycling tracks and improving road access, RTA is encouraging people to use bicycles and e-scooters, which are more eco-friendly. The new cycling tracks are expected to handle up to 5,200 users per hour, which shows how important it is to improve the city's infrastructure for different types of transport.
Overall, the Hessa Street development project is a major step in improving Dubai’s transportation system. It will make travel faster, safer, and more efficient, benefiting both drivers and cyclists. With the project nearing completion, Dubai’s road network will be better equipped to handle the growing needs of its population.
