The critique reflects broader concerns over heritage preservation in Egypt, a country heavily reliant on tourism, contributing 10 percent to its GDP. The controversy resonates with previous debates, notably the destruction in Cairo's historic areas, leading to civil society mobilizations focused on urban planning and heritage issues.

Recent heritage debates extended to Alexandria, where the fifteenth-century Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi mosque faced controversy. Local authorities initiated an investigation following a renovation contractor's decision to repaint the mosque's ornate, carved, and colored ceilings in white. These incidents underscore ongoing challenges in balancing development and preservation in Egypt's rich historical landscape.
