A video revealing the renovation work on Egypt's Menkaure pyramid in Giza has ignited a wave of criticism on social media. Mostafa Waziri, the head of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, hailed the project as "the project of the century" in contrast. The renovation involves setting blocks of granite on the pyramid's base to restore its original style, as it was originally encased in granite. The three-year project, led by Waziri as part of the Egyptian-Japanese mission, aims to present "Egypt's gift to the world in the 21st century."
However, the video drew disapproval in the comments section, with Egyptologist Monica Hanna expressing strong opposition. Hanna questioned the intervention, stating, "The only thing missing was to add tiling to the pyramid of Menkaure! When are we going to stop the absurdity in the management of Egyptian heritage?" She called for immediate mobilization among archaeologists, emphasizing the violation of international principles on renovations.
Sarcasm also surfaced among commentators, with some humorously suggesting plans to straighten the Tower of Pisa or proposing wallpapering the pyramids. The critique reflects broader concerns over heritage preservation in Egypt, a country heavily reliant on tourism, contributing 10 percent to its GDP. The controversy resonates with previous debates, notably the destruction in Cairo's historic areas, leading to civil society mobilizations focused on urban planning and heritage issues.
Recent heritage debates extended to Alexandria, where the fifteenth-century Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi mosque faced controversy. Local authorities initiated an investigation following a renovation contractor's decision to repaint the mosque's ornate, carved, and colored ceilings in white. These incidents underscore ongoing challenges in balancing development and preservation in Egypt's rich historical landscape.
