Friday marks the day for the FIFA World Cup 2026 draw, which will officially kick off the tournament taking place from June 11 to July 19 across the USA, Canada, and Mexico. A historic total of 48 nations will compete, with Qatar’s national team qualifying after finishing first in Group A during Asian qualifiers, ahead of Oman and the UAE.

This is Qatar's second consecutive participation in the World Cup and the first time it has qualified through the conventional process after hosting the event in 2022. The draw ceremony will unfold at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, where the 48 countries will be distributed into 12 groups, each consisting of four teams.

FIFA has categorized the teams into four pots based on rankings released on November 19. The host nations—USA, Canada, and Mexico—occupy the top pot regardless of their respective rankings. Qatar is positioned in the third pot, alongside teams like Norway, Panama, Egypt, Algeria, Scotland, Paraguay, Tunisia, Ivory Coast, Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa, ensuring they will avoid facing these teams in the initial group stage.

The second pot comprises teams such as Croatia, Morocco, Colombia, Uruguay, Switzerland, Japan, Senegal, Iran, South Korea, Ecuador, Austria, and Australia. Pot four features teams including Jordan, Cape Verde, Ghana, Curacao, Haiti, New Zealand, and winners from European and global play-offs.

The World Cup 2026 is set to be remarkable for Arab representation, with seven teams already securing places: Qatar, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco. Iraq could join through the global play-offs in March, potentially bringing the count to eight Arab teams. Tunisia, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia will mark their seventh World Cup appearance, while Algeria will play its fifth, and Egypt its fourth. Jordan will make its debut, while Qatar returns post-2022 hosting.

FIFA will allocate teams from each pot into groups A through L during the draw, maintaining organization. The three host countries will be strategically placed with Mexico on top of Group A, Canada on Group B, and the USA on Group C. Moreover, FIFA aims to prevent high-ranking teams such as Spain, Argentina, France, and England from clashing early on by assigning them separate paths leading to the semi-finals.

A crucial guideline prohibits more than one team from the same confederation in a group—except for UEFA, which can have a maximum of two teams in a group due to its 16 representatives. This structured protocol ensures that each continental confederation has fair representation while adding excitement for fans worldwide anticipating an unforgettable and historic World Cup 2026.
