The UK’s charity regulator has started an investigation into Sentebale, a charity that Prince Harry helped to create to support young people affected by HIV and AIDS in Africa.
On Thursday, the Charity Commission said it had opened a regulatory compliance case. This means they will check if the people who have been managing the charity — both past and present — have followed the rules and acted properly under charity law.
The investigation began after serious arguments broke out between Prince Harry, the charity’s co-founder, and Sophie Chandauka, the current chairperson of Sentebale. Things became worse when Chandauka accused Harry of bullying and trying to hide the truth. These claims were made public on Sunday.

Earlier, Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, who co-founded the charity with him in 2006, said they were stepping away from Sentebale. In a joint statement, they described the situation as “devastating” and said the relationship with Chandauka had “broken down beyond repair”. This led several trustees (board members) to also quit and call for Chandauka to resign from her position.
Sentebale was started by Prince Harry in memory of his late mother, Princess Diana, who died in a car crash in 1997 when Harry was only 12 years old. The charity’s name “Sentebale” means “Forget Me Not” in the Sesotho language, which is spoken in Lesotho. The name also means goodbye, making it a meaningful tribute to his mother.
After stepping away from royal duties in 2020, Prince Harry kept only a few personal projects, including Sentebale. He once said he was “committed for the rest of my life” to the charity.
However, now that Harry and Seeiso have both left, Chandauka has said that “Sentebale has a future”, even without Prince Harry.
This investigation and the recent fight inside the charity are another difficult moment for Prince Harry, who has already faced many challenges since his split from the Royal Family.
