Pope Leo XIV made a historic one-day visit to Monaco on Saturday, calling on its residents to use their wealth, global influence, and Catholic faith for the greater good.
During his address, the Pope emphasized the importance of upholding the sanctity of life, urging people to protect and promote human dignity “from conception until natural death.” His message reflects the Catholic Church’s firm stance against abortion and euthanasia.
The visit marked a significant moment, as Leo became the first pope to travel to Monaco since Pope Paul III visited the region in 1538.
Upon arrival, Pope Leo XIV was welcomed at the heliport by Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene. The reception included ceremonial honors, reflecting Monaco’s deep-rooted traditions and strong ties with the Vatican.
At the royal palace, members of the royal family gathered in formal attire. Princess Charlene wore white, a rare privilege granted to Catholic queens and princesses, known as “le privilège du blanc.”
Message of Responsibility and Peace
Speaking from the palace balcony, Pope Leo urged Monaco to use its unique position and “gift of smallness” responsibly. He warned against the growing global trend of power misuse and oppression, which he said threatens peace worldwide.
Later, while addressing the Catholic community at the cathedral, he reinforced the importance of faith in guiding moral decisions and shaping society.
Monaco’s Catholic Identity
Monaco remains one of the few European nations where Catholicism is the official state religion. Recently, Prince Albert rejected a proposal to legalize abortion, highlighting the continued influence of Catholic values in the country.
Although surrounded by France—where abortion is legal—Monaco maintains its independent stance, aligning with other Catholic leaders in Europe who have upheld similar principles.
A Symbolic Visit
Known globally for its luxury lifestyle, tax-friendly policies, and events like the Formula 1 Grand Prix, Monaco also showcased its spiritual side during the papal visit.
Pope Leo’s visit included a public Mass at a sports stadium and meetings with the local Catholic community. Residents gathered in large numbers, waving flags and greeting the Pope as he traveled through the streets in his popemobile.
With a population of around 38,000, Monaco’s diverse and largely Catholic community played host to a visit that combined tradition, faith, and a strong moral message for the modern world.
