Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), which has been losing money, has decided to increase the salaries of its workers. The staff has not had a pay raise for the past four years, and with prices going up, they were struggling. The PIA spokesperson said the decision was made after the board of directors had a meeting and agreed that the workers needed help. This move will help keep PIA workers at the airline, the spokesperson added.

In the past, PIA has faced financial troubles, and the government tried to sell the airline. But when they tried to sell it, they only got one bid, and it was very low – just Rs 10 billion. The government did not accept the bid and decided to take the matter back to the cabinet for review.
Federal Minister for Privatization, Aleem Khan, explained why the sale of PIA failed. He said that the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) did not agree to remove a tax (GST) on buying new planes, which made the bid lower. He also shared that when the privatization process began in November 2023, PIA's losses were Rs 830 billion. He mentioned that the process should continue, even though the airline’s financial condition is very poor.
PIA’s pay raise is a small step toward keeping the workers happy during tough times, but the airline’s future still looks uncertain. The government continues to try to privatize PIA, but the process faces many challenges.
