Photographer Recounts Capturing Bullet That Grazed Trump's Ear

In a harrowing turn of events at a rally in Pennsylvania, former President Donald Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt, with the moment captured in a striking photograph by Doug Mills, a veteran photographer for The New York Times. Standing just feet away from Trump, Mills's photo shows the bullet trajectory behind the 78-year-old leader's head after it grazed his right ear.

Reflecting on the intense experience, Mills recounted the rapid sequence of events: "It happened so fast, but now I can see it all in slow-motion." He described hearing gunfire and instinctively continuing to shoot photos. Only upon reviewing his images did he realize he had captured the bullet's path in a single frame, taken at 1/1,800 of a second.

"I never imagined witnessing an assassination attempt on a president, let alone photographing it," Mills admitted, emphasizing the surreal nature of the event.

Mills, who has covered U.S. presidents since 1983, credits his experience for being in the right place to capture such a critical moment. He recalled rushing to the stage as Trump was helped to his feet, capturing both the initial defiance and then the seriousness that followed as Trump assessed his injuries.

Following the attempt, the FBI identified the assailant as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was shot by Secret Service snipers after firing multiple shots from a nearby rooftop. Witnesses had alerted security about Crooks moving between rooftops with a firearm pointed toward the rally.

"This is a moment unlike any I've witnessed in my career," Mills reflected somberly. "To see the immediate shift from defiance to vulnerability on the face of a president is something I never thought I'd experience."

The incident has sparked nationwide concern and a heightened focus on security measures at political events, underscoring the ongoing tensions in U.S. politics.
