The FIFA World Cup play-off semi-finals delivered high drama and crushing disappointment for Wales, Republic of Ireland, and Northern Ireland, as all three sides saw their qualification dreams slip away.
Bosnia Edge Wales in Dramatic Shoot-out
Wales suffered a painful exit despite a spirited performance at Cardiff City Stadium. The hosts took the lead in the second half through Daniel James, whose strike looked set to seal victory.
However, Bosnia’s experienced forward Edin Džeko equalised late in the 86th minute, forcing extra time. With neither side able to find a winner, the match was decided on penalties.
Wales faltered under pressure, missing two crucial spot-kicks. Bosnia held their nerve, converting four penalties, with young talent Kerim Alajbegovic scoring the decisive goal to secure a 4–2 shoot-out victory.
The result ends Wales’ hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while Bosnia progress to face Italy national football team in the Path A final.
Ireland Collapse After Strong Start
The Republic of Ireland endured a heartbreaking defeat after surrendering a two-goal lead against the Czech Republic in Prague.
Ireland appeared in control early on, with Troy Parrott converting a penalty and an own goal doubling their advantage. But the hosts mounted a strong comeback.
Patrik Schick reduced the deficit from the penalty spot before captain Ladislav Krejci equalised late to send the match into extra time.
The shoot-out proved decisive. Despite a promising start, Ireland missed key penalties, while goalkeeper Matej Kovar made two vital saves. Jan Kliment converted the winning penalty, sealing a 4–3 victory.
Ireland’s dream of returning to the World Cup for the first time since 2002 came to an end, while the Czech Republic advanced to the play-off final.
Italy Too Strong for Northern Ireland
In Bergamo, Italy national football team proved too strong for Northern Ireland, securing a comfortable 2–0 victory.
After a goalless first half, Italy took control in the second period. Sandro Tonali opened the scoring with a precise effort in the 56th minute, before Moise Kean sealed the win in the 80th minute.
The defeat ends Northern Ireland’s hopes of qualifying for their first World Cup since 1986. Italy now move one step closer to securing a place at the 2026 tournament.
The semi-finals showcased the fine margins of international football, with penalties and late goals proving decisive. For Wales, Ireland, and Northern Ireland, the journey ends in disappointment, while Bosnia, the Czech Republic, and Italy keep their World Cup dreams alive.
