Ethiopia celebrated a remarkable double victory at the Paris Marathon on Sunday, as Mulugeta Uma and Mestawut Fikir clinched the men's and women's titles, respectively. This achievement marked the first time in five years that Ethiopia secured a double win in the prestigious event.
In the men's race, Uma triumphed with an impressive time of 2 hours, 5 minutes, and 33 seconds, outpacing his Kenyan competitors Titus Kipruto and Elisha Rotich. Kipruto finished closely behind Uma, trailing by a mere 15 seconds, while Rotich crossed the finish line more than a minute later. Rotich, a pre-race favorite, had set the course record in 2021, adding to the anticipation surrounding the event.

On the women's side, Fikir made a stunning debut in the marathon, securing victory with a time of 2 hours, 20 minutes, and 45 seconds. She narrowly edged out her compatriot Enat Tirusew by a mere three seconds, while Kenyan athlete Vivian Cheruiyot claimed the third position.
The last time Ethiopia achieved such a double victory in Paris was in 2019 when Abrha Milaw and Gelete Burka emerged victorious in the men's and women's races, respectively.
The Paris Marathon witnessed a different course layout compared to the Olympic event scheduled for August. Despite this, Uma and Fikir showcased exceptional prowess and determination, reaffirming Ethiopia's dominance in long-distance running.
Looking ahead, the Olympic marathon events are slated to take place on August 10 for the men and August 11 for the women, providing another opportunity for athletes to showcase their talent on the global stage.
