NY-Bound Flight Diverts to Canada Midair Due to Cockpit Fire

On February 3rd, a New York City-bound flight faced a terrifying incident as a cockpit fire erupted shortly after takeoff from Toronto Pearson International Airport, as reported by The New York Post. The Endeavor Air regional jet, with 74 passengers, had to promptly reverse course and make an emergency landing back in Toronto.

Around 6:52 am during the climb to cruising altitude, the pilot urgently declared a "mayday" to the air traffic controller, noting sparks emanating from the airplane's windshield. In a recently posted audio on YouTube, the distressing moment unfolds with the pilot's frantic communication.

According to The New York Post, the crew identified the source as the captain's side windshield heater, sparking and emitting flames. The pilot, now calmer, reports, "This is Endeavor 4826, declaring an emergency. I just had a fire, a spark-up, an electrical fire, up in the cockpit. It looks like it's out currently. Requesting a return to Toronto immediately."

In response, air traffic control instructs the pilot to turn the Bombardier CRJ-900 plane back and initiate a descent. Acting swiftly, the pilots don oxygen masks and swiftly request an immediate return to Toronto. Emergency vehicles stand ready for the landing.

The flight crew successfully extinguishes the fire and navigates the aircraft back to the airport, executing a safe landing on the runway. Fortunately, no injuries are reported among the passengers and crew. A comprehensive inspection of the plane is conducted to determine the fire's cause and verify airworthiness before resuming further flights.
