Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO and largest shareholder, took to the social-media platform X, which he owns, to criticize Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, labeling them as "propaganda words" for racism, sexism, and other -isms. Despite this stance, Tesla has actively promoted diversity and inclusion efforts, claiming to be a majority-minority company with a significant representation of employees from historically underrepresented communities.
Musk's controversial statement came in contrast to Tesla's previous efforts, as the company has emphasized its commitment to DEI through various initiatives. Tesla published its first Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion report in December 2020, highlighting the company's efforts to break through historical barriers to equal opportunity in the United States.
The electric vehicle maker has organized hiring events specifically targeting women and students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Hispanic-Serving Institutions. Additionally, Tesla has conducted internal events celebrating employee diversity, established Employee Resource Groups, and launched a nationwide internal DEI newsletter in 2022.
However, Tesla has faced legal challenges related to workplace discrimination. In February 2022, California's civil rights agency sued Tesla for alleged "rampant racism" at its Fremont factory on behalf of Black workers. In September of the same year, the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission also filed a lawsuit against Tesla, accusing the company of subjecting Black workers to "severe or pervasive racial harassment."
Despite Musk's criticism, Tesla has maintained its commitment to DEI, asserting in its 2022 Impact Report that "inclusion is everyone's responsibility." The report emphasizes that employees are introduced to DEI principles from day one during onboarding and are encouraged to participate in Employee Resource Groups, led by passionate individuals dedicated to creating a strong sense of community within the company.
