In a devastating incident, flash floods in Morocco's Atlantic coastal province of Safi have claimed the lives of at least 37 individuals, following extremely heavy rainfall. Local officials reported that a deluge of rain fell intensely over a brief period on Sunday, transforming roads into rivers and inundating low-lying neighborhoods. Residents were thrown into chaos as the floodwaters surged, trapping many in their homes and businesses.

Emergency services quickly mobilized, transporting at least 14 people to hospitals, including two who remain in critical condition. Despite their prompt response, the sheer force of the rising waters complicated rescue efforts. Ongoing search and rescue missions are being conducted to locate any additional victims, while medical teams lend assistance to the injured.

Social media has been flooded with videos displaying torrents of muddy water sweeping away vehicles, debris, and trash bins throughout various neighborhoods in Safi. Reports indicate that over 70 homes and businesses in the historic district were submerged after just an hour of rain. Many residents suffered losses of furniture, appliances, and valuables as floodwaters rapidly invaded their living spaces.

The governorate of Safi issued a statement outlining security measures implemented to protect the affected areas and assist residents. However, some locals expressed annoyance over the delay in deploying water-pumping trucks to alleviate the flooding. Damage to roads has also restricted traffic flow, isolating several routes to and from this crucial Atlantic port.

Local reports indicated that vital provincial roadways connecting Safi to surrounding towns have sustained severe damage due to flooding. In an effort to ensure safety, educational authorities announced the suspension of school activities across Safi on Monday. By Sunday evening, water levels had receded, leaving behind a scene of thick mud, damaged infrastructure, and extensive property loss, prompting residents to start the cleanup process and salvage belongings.

Weather experts have cautioned that more heavy rainfall could impact parts of Morocco in the forthcoming days. The nation is also grappling with snowfall in the Atlas Mountains amid years of drought, with 2024 marking Morocco's hottest year to date. The tragedy in Safi follows another incident in Fes, where 19 lives were lost due to collapsing structures, underscoring growing concerns regarding extreme weather patterns and infrastructure vulnerabilities.
