One of the biggest problems people in Mumbai face today is traveling on roads that are full of potholes and construction work. The city’s main roads and internal streets are dug up for repairs, making commuting a nightmare. Many people get so frustrated that they either lose their temper in road rage or make fun of the situation.
To control this growing frustration, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which is currently working on 701 kilometers of roads, recently decided to pause any new road-digging projects. This is to avoid causing more problems for people trying to get around the city.
Understanding the troubles faced by travelers, Uber has introduced a new scheme called the ‘Missed Flight Connection Cover.’ Under this, if a passenger misses their flight due to traffic delays while traveling in an Uber, they can claim compensation of up to ₹7,500. This applies to both domestic and international flights. Apart from this, Uber is also offering coverage for OPD and medical costs in case of an accident.

Uber launched this plan at the end of February in partnership with Reliance General Insurance. According to Uber sources, this decision was made after many cab drivers refused to take airport trips. Reaching the airport on time is crucial, and drivers were hesitant because of heavy traffic and unpredictable delays. To avail of this insurance, passengers only need to pay ₹3 extra per ride.
Drivers, however, continue to struggle with the poor condition of Mumbai’s roads. The Maharashtra Rajya Rashtriya Kamgar Sangh (MRRKS), a union representing cab drivers, said in a recent meeting that drivers are often abused or blamed by passengers for getting stuck in traffic and reaching the airport late. Drivers say that Uber’s app map shows an estimated arrival time of 2-3 minutes, but in reality, it often extends to 8-10 minutes due to roadwork and congestion. Moreover, the wait time at the airport has also increased, making drivers hesitant to accept airport rides.
How the insurance works According to Uber, passengers can claim the ‘Missed Flight Connection Cover’ only if they set their drop-off location as the airport while booking the ride. The estimated time of arrival (ETA) must fall within 90 to 120 minutes before the flight. To claim the insurance, passengers need to submit several documents, including a signed claim form, booking reference number, ride details, a copy of their flight ticket, and confirmation from the airline that they missed their flight. They must also provide a refund certificate, proof of a new flight booking, and a crossed cheque for the NEFT transfer.
An Uber official mentioned that for a successful claim, the booking and travel times must be reasonable.
Struggles of cab drivers Many Uber drivers say that bad roads have significantly reduced their earnings. Frustrated with the situation, some cab drivers went on a flash strike at Mumbai airport on Tuesday evening. One of the drivers, R Jadhav, explained that they are already earning less because ride fares are low, and Uber takes a 25-30% commission. Now, because of the poor road conditions, their losses have increased, making it harder for them to sustain their livelihood. The strike lasted from 5 PM to 9 PM.
Some Mumbai residents are also speaking out against the road conditions. On Instagram, a popular user @mojorojo posted a sarcastic message directed at BMC. The post read: “Tell us the amount you need after which you will say ‘we are full’... just take that full and final amount from taxpayers and give us our city back.”
The growing frustration among both passengers and drivers highlights the urgent need for better roads and smoother transportation in Mumbai. Until then, Uber’s insurance plan might offer some relief, but the real solution lies in fixing the city’s crumbling infrastructure.
