The economic shockwaves of the ongoing Middle East conflict are being felt far beyond the region, with African nations facing a sharp rise in fuel prices and living costs.
In Lagos, taxi driver Adegbola Isaac witnessed fuel prices climb twice within a single weekend, reaching 1,350 naira per liter — nearly a 35% increase since the war involving Iran began on February 28. The surge has significantly reduced his daily earnings.
“It is hitting hard,” Isaac said, reflecting the struggles of millions across the continent.
Global Conflict, Local Impact
The crisis intensified after disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route, restricted fuel supply. As most African countries rely heavily on imported refined petroleum, the impact has been immediate.
Fuel price hikes are now driving up transportation costs and the prices of essential goods and services, worsening existing economic hardships in some of the world’s poorest communities.
Africa’s Vulnerability to Global Shocks
According to UNCTAD, Africa remains highly exposed to global crises due to its dependence on external trade. Over half of the continent’s imports and exports involve just a few non-African nations.
Countries like Kenya, Uganda, and South Africa depend heavily on fuel imports from the Middle East. Meanwhile, Nigeria — despite being Africa’s largest oil producer — still imports refined fuel due to limited local refining capacity.
Rising Costs and Public Strain
Across the continent, citizens are adapting to rising costs. In Zimbabwe, workers have protested for higher wages as living expenses surge. In South Africa, industries reliant on diesel have begun panic buying amid supply fears.
At the same time, access to fertilizers is also at risk, potentially affecting agriculture in vulnerable regions such as Sudan and Somalia. Kenya’s flower industry has already reported losses of up to $1.4 million per week due to reduced demand and shipping disruptions.
Search for Alternatives
In response, African governments are exploring new supply routes and partnerships. Countries including South Africa, Kenya, and Ghana have turned to Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery for fuel supplies.
The refinery has recently completed large-scale fuel shipments to several African nations, marking a significant step toward regional energy independence. However, experts warn that rising demand and potential supply disruptions could challenge its capacity.
Uncertain Future
Energy experts caution that if the conflict continues, Africa could face deeper economic uncertainty. Prolonged disruption may push the continent into uncharted territory, with unpredictable consequences for economies already under pressure.
As global tensions persist, Africa once again finds itself bearing the brunt of a crisis it did not create — highlighting the urgent need for more resilient and self-sufficient energy systems.
