Former Malaysian Finance Minister Daim Zainuddin, who faced charges earlier this year for failing to disclose assets, has passed away at the age of 86. His lawyer, Gurdial Singh Nijar, confirmed his death on Wednesday, adding that the funeral would be held the same day. Daim had been hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU) after suffering a stroke in recent weeks. However, his lawyer did not specify the exact cause of death.

Daim, a key figure in Malaysian politics and a close ally of former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, served as the country's Finance Minister in two separate terms—first from 1984 to 1991 and again from 1999 to 2001. During his tenure, he played a significant role in shaping Malaysia's economic policies and was known for his strong leadership during periods of economic change.

Earlier this year, Daim was charged with failing to disclose his assets, a violation of Malaysia's anti-corruption laws. This case gained significant attention as it was one of the most high-profile corruption investigations involving a prominent public figure. Daim, however, denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty.

His passing marks the end of an era for a political figure who had a lasting influence on Malaysia's financial and political landscape. While his later years were marked by legal challenges, Daim remained an important figure in the country's political circles, particularly due to his association with Mahathir and his influence within the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO).
