A significant winter storm is on track to unleash freezing temperatures, substantial snowfall, and hazardous ice across large regions of the central and eastern United States this weekend. Authorities estimate its impact could potentially touch around 150 million individuals, constituting about half of the nation's populace, leading to travel interruptions, power failures, and serious safety hazards.
The National Weather Service reports that the storm will extend from the Central Plains through to the East Coast. Certain hilly areas in the Appalachians and West Virginia may witness snowfall reaching up to 20 inches. Many eastern states can expect a mix of snow and freezing rain, heightening the risk of slippery roads, downed trees, and compromised power lines.
Meteorologists caution that the cold following the storm will be severe. Brian Hurley from the Weather Prediction Center indicated that nearly half of all Americans are subjected to various weather advisories due to the severe cold and heavy snow. Particularly in northern regions, Arctic air spilling in from Canada will drive temperatures significantly below the season's average.
Major metropolitan areas are bracing for significant accumulations of snow. New York City, Boston, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., could receive between 4 and 10 inches of heavy, wet snow starting Saturday. Forecasts for Washington suggest temperatures plunging into the low 20s Fahrenheit, with Boston possibly seeing overnight lows around 7 degrees. Chicago is set to undergo perilous conditions, with temperatures expected to dip below zero and wind chills plummeting to about 30 degrees below zero.
State and local governments have begun implementing emergency measures. New York State has activated a "Code Blue," mandating shelters to extend hours and ensure access for homeless residents to warmth and safety. Officials are advising residents to limit travel and prepare for potential power outages.
In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott has declared a state of emergency in anticipation of the storm. Additional crews and resources have been mobilized to manage traffic issues, respond to emergencies, and restore power amid outages. The governor has urged residents to stay informed, refrain from non-essential travel, and heed local authorities' guidance.
The storm may also have mixed repercussions for agriculture. Experts suggest that the snowfall could shield dormant winter wheat crops in parts of Oklahoma experiencing drought. Conversely, extreme cold could adversely affect crops lacking snow cover. Livestock in the Southern Plains may also endure stress due to icy and cold weather.
In southern regions, icing rather than snow poses the biggest threat. Areas stretching from Central Virginia to Northern Texas could face up to half an inch of ice, which can create hazardous road conditions and trigger extensive power outages.
Despite the daunting forecast, some residents are attempting to maintain routine activities while taking necessary precautions. Business owners in colder locales prepare with additional heating devices, and hardware stores in cities like Chicago report a spike in sales of space heaters.
Forecasters anticipate the storm will start to clear from most locations by late Sunday or early Monday. Nonetheless, the intense cold is likely to persist, especially in the northern Plains. Officials continue to urge the public to stay indoors when weather permits, dress in layers, and check on neighbors who may be vulnerable as the harsh winter conditions move across the nation.
