Judge blocks Trump's order on restricting birthright citizenship

A judge in the U.S. has blocked President Donald Trump’s plan to stop some babies born in the U.S. from automatically becoming citizens. The judge said the plan was against the U.S. Constitution.

Trump had signed the plan on his first day back in office. The plan said that children born in the U.S. would not be citizens if their parents were not U.S. citizens or legal residents. Four states—Washington, Arizona, Illinois, and Oregon—told the judge that this went against the 14th Amendment. This law says anyone born in the U.S. is a citizen.

The judge, John Coughenour, said the plan was wrong. He didn’t understand how anyone could say it was legal. “This is a clear violation of the Constitution,” he said. Coughenour has been a judge for over 40 years and believes the case is very simple.

The judge’s decision means the plan is blocked for now. It will not be enforced for 14 days while the judge decides if the block should continue. A hearing to decide this will happen on February 6.

If Trump’s plan had gone ahead, any child born after February 19 to parents who were not U.S. citizens or legal residents would not be a U.S. citizen. These children could have been sent back to their parents' home country. They would also not be able to get a Social Security number or work in the U.S. when they grew up.

Trump’s team said the plan was legal, but the judge disagreed. The judge quickly blocked the plan, and Trump said he would try to change the decision. This case is part of the bigger discussion in the U.S. about who should be allowed to become a U.S. citizen.
