An Iranian court has sentenced popular singer Amir Hossein Maghsoudloo, also known as Tataloo, to death after he was convicted of blasphemy. The decision came after an appeal in which the Supreme Court accepted the prosecutor's objection to a previous five-year jail sentence. The new verdict, reported by the reformist newspaper Etemad, states that Tataloo was found guilty of insulting the Prophet Muhammad, which is considered a serious offense in Iran.
The case against Tataloo has now been reopened, and the court’s new ruling has handed down the death sentence. The verdict can still be appealed, so it is not final yet. Tataloo, who is 37 years old, had been living in Istanbul since 2018. However, in December 2023, Turkish police handed him over to Iranian authorities, and he has been in detention ever since.
Along with the blasphemy charge, Tataloo had also been sentenced to 10 years for promoting “prostitution.” Additionally, he was charged with spreading “propaganda” against the Islamic Republic and publishing “obscene content.”

Tataloo is well known in Iran’s underground music scene. He is famous for blending rap, pop, and R&B. Despite his controversial image, he had at one point been supported by some conservative politicians in Iran, who saw him as a way to connect with the younger, more liberal generation. In 2017, Tataloo even met with Iran’s then-president Ebrahim Raisi in a televised meeting, though it was seen as awkward. Tataloo had also shown support for Iran’s nuclear program with a song in 2015, although this backfired in 2018 when tensions with the United States increased under President Donald Trump.
Tataloo’s case has brought attention to the strict laws in Iran regarding freedom of speech and the arts, with musicians and artists facing serious consequences for their work. His supporters argue that his case is a sign of the ongoing crackdown on freedom of expression in the country.
