In today’s world, where anyone with a smartphone can become a filmmaker, breaking into the professional film industry is still a tough journey. At the International Photography Festival (Xposure) 2025, a panel of experts came together to share their experiences and offer advice to young filmmakers looking to make their mark.
The panel discussion, titled “Breaking into the Industry: Tips for Aspiring Filmmakers,” was led by renowned photojournalist and bestselling author Rick Smolan. It featured experienced professionals like Brett Neal and Ashley Grant, co-founders of B7A; Dennis Schmelz, a well-known travel filmmaker and photographer; and Rory McLoughlin, an award-winning commercial film director and executive producer at Film x People. Each speaker shared valuable insights on how to succeed in filmmaking, focusing on personal growth, networking, and the role of technology in modern cinema.

The Importance of Self-Belief and Storytelling
Brett Neal emphasized the importance of believing in oneself and staying true to one’s vision. “Find out who you are and accept it,” he advised. “If you can tell your own story, you can tell anybody’s story.” Neal believes that many aspiring filmmakers hold themselves back because they listen to others instead of trusting their instincts.
Neal’s career started in screenwriting, but over time, he expanded into multi-platform storytelling. Today, he works on children’s content and is pitching films in Saudi Arabia. He encouraged young filmmakers to embrace their unique ideas and not be afraid to share their voices.
Ashley Grant added that saying ‘no’ is just as important as saying ‘yes.’ “Opportunities will come your way, but not all of them will be right for you,” he said. “Learn to say no to things that don’t align with your values and long-term goals.” According to Grant, understanding when to decline projects helps filmmakers stay true to their artistic vision.
Dennis Schmelz shared how he built his career by combining his love for travel with filmmaking. His key advice was to focus on personal growth instead of just equipment. “Invest in yourself—travel, take workshops, and meet people,” he said. “Don’t just think about cameras and gadgets. Learning and building connections are far more important.”
For Rory McLoughlin, networking was a crucial part of his journey. Having transitioned from a career in insurance to filmmaking, he understands the power of personal connections. “Film school can be useful, but nothing beats hands-on experience,” he explained. “If you want to get started, find someone who inspires you and offers to help. Be proactive and useful, and you’ll get opportunities.”
Navigating the Film Industry and the Role of AI
The panelists agreed that while opportunities exist, competition is fierce. Neal pointed out that networking is more than just making contacts—it’s about adding value. “The film industry is still about who you know, but real networking is about helping others. Find ways to be useful, and doors will open for you,” he said.
A hot topic during the discussion was the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in filmmaking. Neal warned against depending too much on technology for creativity. “AI can be helpful for script editing and visual planning, but it lacks human emotions,” he explained. “Great films are built on deep characters and real emotions—things only humans can create.”
McLoughlin, on the other hand, encouraged young filmmakers to embrace AI as a tool rather than a replacement. “You’re in a time where new technology is developing fast. Learn how to use AI to improve your storytelling, not replace it,” he advised.
Final Words of Wisdom
As the discussion came to a close, each panelist left the audience with a final piece of advice. Neal reminded young filmmakers to always believe in themselves. Grant emphasized the power of saying ‘no’ to the wrong opportunities. Schmelz stressed the importance of building a personal brand and continuously investing in self-growth. McLoughlin encouraged aspiring filmmakers to always be proactive, keep learning, and never stop improving their craft.
With these insights from industry experts, aspiring filmmakers at Xposure 2025 walked away with valuable lessons on how to navigate their careers, stay true to their vision, and make meaningful connections in the world of cinema.
