India’s Electronics Exports Face Gulf Rival Pressure

Post by: Bandan Preet

India’s electronics industry is getting worried about new competition from countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). These countries are quickly growing their electronics manufacturing sectors and may soon become strong competitors for India.

The India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), which speaks for big companies like Apple, Dixon, Motorola, Xiaomi, Lava, Foxconn, and Flex, has asked the Indian government to pay more attention to this issue. Instead of replying with high taxes or trade restrictions, ICEA wants the government to solve these problems through talks and smart diplomacy.

Right now, some countries like Brazil, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and the Philippines are charging much lower tariffs (import taxes) on electronics compared to India. For example, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have only 10% tariffs, while the Philippines charges 17%. This makes it easier and cheaper for foreign companies to do business in these countries.

ICEA says that Saudi Arabia and UAE are especially big threats to India’s electronics exports. These countries are offering Special Economic Zones (SEZs), better manufacturing environments, and lower labor costs — all of which attract global electronics companies.

Brazil, even though it had past trade issues, is also becoming a country to watch because it offers better tariff treatment, which makes things uncertain and tricky for India.

In a recent statement, ICEA said,“We need to keep working closely with the Indian government. Instead of fighting back with more tariffs, we should focus on strong discussions and make full use of rules and agreements that already exist, especially with the U.S. Executive Order.”

This statement comes at a time when the United States announced a 27% tariff in response to past trade disagreements. India had also raised its own tariff to 27% as a reply, but ICEA believes that while this shows India’s strong diplomatic skills, there is still a chance to bring these tariffs down through more talks.

ICEA warns that if India starts using retaliation (fight-back) tactics, the U.S. might increase tariffs even more. That’s why ICEA thinks it is better to stick to peaceful negotiations and avoid actions that could make things worse.

In short, India’s electronics industry wants to stay ahead in the game, but new challenges from Saudi Arabia, UAE, and others mean India needs to act smart — with planning, partnerships, and friendly talks.
