In light of escalating threats from pro-Khalistan elements, the Indian government is taking significant measures to bolster the security of its diplomats in Canada. High Commissioner to Ottawa, Sanjay Kumar Verma, along with five other officials, is expected to receive enhanced protection upon their return to India at the end of this week.
Sources familiar with the situation indicate that this security upgrade will also extend to other Indian diplomats and officials who recently served in Canada. Among those considered most vulnerable are India’s Consul General to Toronto, Siddhartha Nath, who had been in the position for just a few months before being asked to leave the country. Nath’s role becomes particularly critical following the assassination of pro-Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was killed in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18 last year.
The secessionist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) has publicly announced a $500,000 reward for information on Verma's whereabouts, following accusations that he was involved in Nijjar’s killing. Gurpatwant Pannun, the SFJ’s general counsel, stated that the organization is committed to tracking Verma even after his departure from Canada, emphasizing their pursuit of “justice” for Nijjar’s murder. The group has been urging the Canadian government to investigate Verma and to take action against him.

The backdrop of this situation intensified when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau acknowledged credible allegations linking Indian agents to Nijjar’s assassination during a statement in Parliament. In response to these allegations, the Indian government is reportedly considering stricter regulations concerning Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards issued to Canadians of Indian origin, especially targeting those suspected of supporting pro-Khalistan activities.
Despite the rising tensions, India is unlikely to halt the issuance of visas for Canadian citizens, a measure that was implemented last year after Trudeau’s allegations surfaced. The Indian government’s actions follow Trudeau's announcement regarding the deportation of six Indian officials, aimed at disrupting criminal activities that pose a threat to public safety in Canada.
As these developments unfold, the focus remains on the ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada, particularly concerning the activities of pro-Khalistan groups and the safety of Indian representatives abroad.
