A family of Indian origin residing in Brampton, Canada, has been grappling with a distressing ordeal after the front license plate of their vehicle was stolen. Priyanka Kashyap, along with her family, has been inundated with nine parking tickets totaling over $400 from Milton, a nearby town, despite promptly reporting the theft and obtaining replacement plates.
The saga began on May 24 when Kashyap's brother noticed their front license plate missing, suspected stolen from a local mall two days prior. Despite reporting the theft to Peel Regional Police on May 27, they were advised against filing a formal report, citing a lack of specific evidence of theft—a common occurrence due to plates often falling off.

Undeterred, Kashyap swiftly notified Service Ontario on May 28, paying for new plates as advised. However, the bureaucratic nightmare escalated when she began receiving notices from Milton, a town where she does not reside, for overdue parking fines linked to her old license plate. Shockingly, six of these tickets were issued after the theft was reported, highlighting a bureaucratic disconnect between law enforcement and municipal bylaw enforcement.
Town officials in Milton explained that their bylaw officers do not have direct access to the Ministry of Transport database to verify plate status, necessitating a police report for ticket cancellation. Despite showing photographic evidence that her old plate was now on another vehicle, Kashyap faced hurdles in having the fines waived.
Finally, on June 13, Peel police filed an official report, prompting Halton Regional Police to recover the stolen plate. Yet, even after this action, a ninth ticket was issued, underscoring the bureaucratic inefficiencies that have plagued Kashyap and her family for weeks.
Throughout this ordeal, Kashyap expressed frustration at the system's inability to promptly resolve issues caused by criminal activity beyond her control. Peel Regional Police acknowledged the distress caused and emphasized the need for improved coordination between agencies to prevent similar incidents in the future.
