Harvard University has seen a significant drop in the latest CWTS Leiden Ranking 2025, now ranking third. The leading spots are held by China's Zhejiang University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, underscoring the strong emergence of Chinese institutions in the field of global scientific research.
This year, the ranking shows that all of the top nine slots are occupied by Chinese universities, marking a notable change from previous years when American universities led the pack. Harvard consistently ranked high, maintaining its number one spot between 2006 and 2009, during which the University of Toronto was second, and the University of Michigan came in third. In those years, the majority of the top ten were American universities.
In contrast, recent trends indicate a decline in the international standing of U.S. institutions. Six renowned American universities, such as the University of Michigan and UCLA, which were once in the top ten, have now dropped out of the top 15. Harvard itself was first surpassed by Zhejiang University in the 2019-2022 ranking and has been in third place for the 2020-2023 cycle.
The CWTS Leiden Ranking, overseen by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies at Leiden University in the Netherlands, assesses the scientific output and impact of over 1,500 leading universities globally through its Traditional Edition utilizing the Web of Science database.
Indian universities are also making strides, with VIT leading the charge, followed by IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and IIT Madras, reflecting India's increasing footprint in global scientific research.
This year's rankings showcase not only the ascent of Chinese universities but also a wider shift in the dynamics of global research, highlighting a decline in the prominence of established American institutions in favor of rapidly advancing universities in Asia.
