Hong Kong marked a major moment in global innovation as it hosted the first-ever Palladium Global Science Award, a new international programme dedicated to advancing technologies powered by palladium. The debut edition brought together leading researchers, industry leaders and global partners, celebrating five pioneering scientists from Canada, Japan, India, the United States and Saudi Arabia. A total prize fund of $350,000 was shared across three categories.
Supported by the China Precious Metals Industry Committee (CPMIC) along with institutions from South Africa, Japan and China, the award aims to push palladium beyond its familiar industrial uses. The focus this year centred on breakthrough ideas in catalysis, electronics, clean energy, environmental solutions and next-generation materials.
Nearly 100 submissions from more than 30 countries underscored the growing global interest in reimagining the future of this platinum-group metal. The winning projects highlighted how palladium can accelerate sustainability goals, support green manufacturing and open new doors in medical and chemical research.
The ceremony showcased breakthroughs that could transform multiple sectors.
In the Best Scientific Developments in New Palladium Applications category, first place went to Prof. Chao-Jun Li of McGill University, Canada, for successfully activating methane and CO₂ together using a palladium-doped semiconductor under light. His approach offers a way to convert harmful waste gases into useful chemicals such as methanol, signalling a major step toward cleaner industrial processes. The technology has already been licensed by a McGill spin-off for early scaling.
Second place was awarded to Prof. Makoto Fujita of the University of Tokyo, whose palladium-based self-assembly research led to the groundbreaking crystalline sponge method — a tool transforming molecular analysis in pharmaceuticals and advanced materials.
India’s Prof. Natesan Thirupathi of Delhi University won the Best Scientific Article (First Place) for work on cyclopalladation processes that could make drug development faster, cleaner and more precise.
The second place in the same category went to Prof. Michael Joseph Krische of the University of Texas at Austin, recognised for developing safer and greener routes to create important medical compounds through palladium-based cross-coupling techniques.
The Best Applied Concept (First Place) was secured by Associate Professor Safa Faris Kayed from Prince Sattam Bin Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia, for PalladClear — a solution targeting one of industry’s most persistent environmental problems: the effective removal of hazardous dyes and pharmaceutical residues from wastewater. The next phase focuses on shifting this promising lab innovation toward pilot-scale deployment.
As the event concluded, organisers confirmed that the award will return in spring 2026, signalling a long-term plan to build a global innovation ecosystem around palladium. With new applications emerging across clean energy, environment, chemistry and advanced materials, the metal is increasingly being positioned not just as a commodity, but as a driver of the next wave of industrial progress.
