Accra: The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially parted ways with head coach Otto Addo, just 72 days before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The decision was announced on Tuesday, shortly after Ghana suffered a 2-1 defeat against Germany national football team in Stuttgart. This followed another heavy 5-1 loss to Austria national football team in a recent friendly, raising serious concerns about the team’s form ahead of the global tournament.
In an official statement, the GFA confirmed that Otto Addo has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect. The German-born coach, who took charge for a second stint in March 2024, struggled to deliver consistent results during his tenure.
Despite having key players like Antoine Semenyo and Mohammed Kudus in the squad, Addo failed to guide Ghana to qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
During his time in charge, the 50-year-old managed 22 matches, recording eight wins and nine defeats. He previously led Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where the team secured a memorable 3-2 victory over South Korea national football team but exited in the group stage after losses to Portugal national football team and Uruguay national football team.
Ghana, appearing in their fifth World Cup, have been drawn in Group L alongside Croatia national football team, England national football team, and Panama national football team for the 2026 tournament, set to be held across North America.
The GFA is now expected to announce a replacement soon as preparations intensify for the World Cup.
