George Russell delivered a strong performance to win the sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix on Saturday, extending his lead in the Formula One championship.
The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team driver started from pole position at the Shanghai International Circuit and successfully held off a fast challenge from Scuderia Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to take victory in the 19-lap sprint race.
Russell crossed the finish line ahead of Leclerc, who finished just 0.674 seconds behind after battling with teammate Hamilton earlier in the race. Hamilton eventually secured third place, giving Ferrari two cars in the top three of a Formula One race for the first time since the end of 2024.
The race began with intense action as Russell and Hamilton fought for the lead, exchanging positions four times in the opening five laps. Russell later made a decisive move that allowed him to regain the lead and maintain control until the finish.
A late safety car period briefly tightened the field, but Russell remained calm and managed the restart well to secure the eight championship points awarded for the sprint race victory.
Lando Norris, the reigning champion driving for McLaren F1 Team, finished fourth. Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli crossed the line fifth but served a 10-second penalty after a collision with Isack Hadjar of Red Bull Racing on the opening lap.
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri finished sixth, followed by Liam Lawson of Racing Bulls in seventh. Oliver Bearman secured the final point for Haas F1 Team by finishing eighth.
With this win, Russell now leads the Formula One championship standings with 33 points. Antonelli and Leclerc are tied for second place with 22 points each, while Hamilton sits fourth with 18 points.
The sprint victory also follows Russell’s win at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, where Mercedes achieved a strong one-two finish, giving the British driver an impressive start to the 2026 Formula One season.
