Famous actor Gene Hackman passed away from heart disease, one week after his wife, Betsy Arakawa, died from a rare sickness called hantavirus. They were found inside their home in New Mexico. Doctors believe Hackman did not know his wife had died because he had a serious memory illness called Alzheimer’s.

Doctors said both Hackman, who was 95 years old, and Arakawa, who was 65, died from natural causes. Hackman’s health was already very weak, and his heart was not strong. When his wife passed away, he may not have understood what happened or been able to ask for help.

Police did not find anything suspicious when they discovered the couple’s bodies on February 26. They also checked for poison in the air but did not find any.

Investigators believe that Arakawa was last seen alive on February 11 when she went shopping. She returned home in the afternoon. Hackman’s heart device showed that his heart stopped working on February 18, meaning he likely passed away that day.

Doctors believe Hackman was too weak and confused to call anyone for help after his wife died. He may not have even noticed that she had passed away.

Hackman was found lying near the entrance of the house. His wife was found in the bathroom. Doctors said she died from hantavirus, a disease that spreads from mouse droppings. This disease can cause breathing problems and is very dangerous. It is most common in spring and summer when people clean closed spaces like sheds or garages. This was the first case of hantavirus in New Mexico this year.

The couple had three dogs. One dog was found dead inside a closet, but two dogs survived. Doctors said dogs cannot get sick from hantavirus, so they are testing to see what caused the dog’s death.

By the time police found the couple, their bodies had started to dry out due to the high location and dry air in Santa Fe.

Friends of Hackman and Arakawa were sad to hear about their deaths. Stuart Ashman, a man who knew Hackman from a local gym, said he wished someone had checked on them earlier.

A doctor named Victor Weedn said the couple’s deaths were unusual because people usually assume two people found together died at the same time. But in this case, Hackman’s memory disease likely stopped him from asking for help after his wife passed away.

Hackman was a Hollywood legend, winning two big awards for his acting. He starred in famous movies like The French Connection, Hoosiers, and Superman. After retiring, he spent his time painting and writing books.

Arakawa was born in Hawaii and studied music. She went to the University of Southern California and worked at a gym, where she met Hackman in the 1980s. The couple later moved to New Mexico, where they invested in local businesses. Hackman also helped run the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe.
