Easter Egg Prices Soar, Families Get Creative with Alternatives

Post by: Pratik Kumar

For 40 years, Young’s Jersey Dairy in Yellow Springs, Ohio, has held a big Easter egg hunt. Every year, they used 10,000 real eggs, which they dyed by hand. To save time, they baked the eggs instead of boiling them. After cooling, they dipped them in bright colors so children could find them during the event.

This year, things will be different. For the first time, the farm will not use real eggs. Instead, they will use plastic eggs. Inside each egg, there will be a coupon for a free ride on the farm’s carousel. The farm had to make this change because eggs have become too expensive and hard to find.

In February, the Young family started thinking about whether they should still use real eggs. The event brings more than 2,000 people each year, and they usually spend about $3,000 (₹256,350) just on eggs. Since eggs are now costly and not always available, they worried about buying so many when stores sometimes don’t have enough.

Even though real eggs won’t be used, most people are happy the event is still happening. John Young, a fourth-generation member of the farm, said people were afraid the event might be canceled because of the high egg prices. "So they’re glad we’re still doing it," he said.

In many places, eggs have become very expensive, making it hard for families to do their usual Easter traditions. Even though prices have started to go down, people are still unsure. Because of this, many families have come up with new ideas.

On social media, people have shared creative ways to replace real eggs. Some are dyeing marshmallows, potatoes, or even onions. These ideas help families keep the fun of Easter without spending too much money.

One of the most popular ideas comes from Lexi Harrison, a food blogger. She made a homemade version of peanut butter chocolate Easter eggs. She mixed peanut butter, almond flour, and maple syrup to shape them like eggs. Then, she covered them in white chocolate colored with blue spirulina powder and matcha. Her recipe became very popular, with more than 64 million views and over 30,000 comments on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.

Harrison believes her video was popular because Easter traditions bring back happy memories. "People remember the fun they had as kids and want to keep that feeling alive," she said. She also noticed that sales of egg-dyeing kits have gone up by 20% this year, which shows that people still want to celebrate in creative ways.

In Michigan, where Harrison lives, eggs have been hard to find. "More than half the time I go to the store, there are no eggs," she said. "I’ve never really liked boiled eggs, so this was a fun idea."

At Young’s Jersey Dairy, the decision to stop using real eggs was not just about saving money. "It wasn’t the cost as much as it was the fear of taking too many eggs from local stores," Young explained. Instead of spending $3,000 on eggs, the farm will give that money to two local food banks to help people in need.

Even though this year’s event is different, Young believes the fun will stay the same. "Plastic eggs can be just as fun," he said. "But I hope we can go back to the old tradition next year."
