An Austrian aviation firm, in collaboration with UAE authorities, is poised to introduce an innovative air taxi in Dubai, drawing inspiration from NASA's Mars helicopter, 'Ingenuity.' Developed by FlyNow Aviation, the electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air taxi is expected to be commercially operational within 28 months. This initiative comes as megacities worldwide grapple with the escalating threat of traffic collapse, prompting a need for alternative, efficient transportation solutions.
FlyNow Aviation's air taxi aims to offer a seamless and efficient mode of transport for both passengers and cargo. The company emphasizes its commitment to providing the "most efficient configuration and infrastructure footprint" in the air mobility space. The venture is already underway with the active collaboration of Austrian developers and UAE authorities.
Yvonne Venter, Co-founder and CEO of FlyNow Aviation, highlights the versatility of their eVTOL, mentioning single and twin-seater versions. Notably, the cargo version is scheduled for startup series production within the same 28-month timeframe before passenger versions. The cargo variant is designed to carry up to 200kg, aligning with logistics standards.
Key features of the eVTOL include a 130 kmph cruise speed and remarkably low noise levels, equivalent to that of a dishwasher. The rotor system is highly efficient, enabling flight in atmospheres with lower density than Earth's, making it suitable for various environments, including high altitudes.
The air taxi's operational philosophy draws parallels with NASA's Mars helicopter, 'Ingenuity,' emphasizing efficiency and adaptability. With a range of 50 km (plus an additional 25 km for security reasons), the eVTOL is designed for quiet, comfortable, and rapid transportation.
FlyNow Aviation's approach to flight management involves specific landing and starting hubs, employing an autopilot system to follow predefined routes. The flight plan is meticulously devised by either air traffic management or an affiliated company, taking into account weather conditions and safety considerations.
In case of emergencies or passenger discomfort, the eVTOLs are equipped with a panic button, enabling a safe descent to the nearest alternative landing spot. Collision avoidance sensors further enhance safety, with air traffic control retaining sole authority to intervene in the flight path.
The company, already holding patented technology, has secured commitments from initial customers and is actively engaging in discussions with potential investors. FlyNow Aviation sees the Middle East, particularly the UAE and Saudi Arabia, as a strategic and lucrative market. Ongoing talks with entities like Air Chateau, the first Private Heliport Operator Company in the UAE, reflect the company's commitment to establishing a foothold in the innovative, fast-paced, and ambitious Middle Eastern market.
